US Nurses: Follow your heart to British Columbia, Canada
Expedited Registration Pathways Available for Nurses Educated or Currently Practicing in the United States
Evidence shows that RN nursing education and practice in the US is largely comparable to RN practice in Canada. For this reason, British Columbia offers an expedited registration pathway for Registered Nurses educated or practising in the US.
For US nurses of any designation, the first step in your journey to practising in BC is to create an account with Health Match BC, a free health professional recruitment service funded by the Government of British Columbia.
Are You a Registered Nurse (RN) in the United States?
Once you have set up your Health Match BC account, the next step is to create your account with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and apply for practising registration. RN applicants from the US will NOT need to complete a competency assessment unless:
- You have NOT practiced at least 1,125 hours as an RN in the US in the past five years, or
- You have NOT completed an approved RN education program in the US within the last five years.
Once you have met all the requirements and paid your registration fees, you will be eligible for full practising registration with BCCNM, listed in their online directory, and authorized to begin practising in BC.
Are You a Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the United States?
Start your journey to practice in British Columbia by registering with Health Match BC to receive support and guidance throughout your registration and job search journeys.
If you’re a Nurse Practitioner interested in practicing in BC, you must obtain registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). To do so, you must first establish your eligibility for Registered Nurse (RN) registration. You can submit your RN and NP applications concurrently through your BCCNM account.
Please note that only NPs educated and registered in Adult, Family, or Pediatric practice streams are currently eligible to work in British Columbia. If your education does not fall within these categories, we encourage you to contact BCCNM’s Registration Services at register@bccnm.ca to discuss your specific situation.
If you meet the eligibility criteria, you may proceed by creating your BCCNM account and applying for practising NP registration. As part of your application, you will be required to submit a current résumé or CV that includes specific details outlined in the BCCNM application guidelines.
Questions About Immigrating to Canada?
If you are a US citizen, you may qualify for a work permit under CUSMA/USMCA (the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement/United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), which offers a quick route to obtaining a work permit. You can apply directly at the port of entry when entering Canada if you have the required documents and have completed the necessary medicals.
Alternatively, you may be eligible for the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP), which provides a pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers and recent graduates with expertise in high-demand healthcare professions in BC. If you’re interested in this program, it’s advisable to discuss it with your prospective employer during the interview process.
